2019 SCJFL 3rd Quarter Elementary Speech & Debate Tournament

 

Greetings to all elementary school speech and debate clubs and schools! On Saturday, March 28th, 2020 (postponed from March 21st) 2020, we will be hosting the third elementary speech tournament of the 2019-2020 school year virtually. We hope your school or organization will join us.

We will close entries on Thur. March 26th at noon, PST.  All fees will be set at that time.

 

REMINDER: All students who have received a trophy in any event (regardless of what novice event they are applying to enter), are no longer eligible for a novice division.  Additionally, any students who have participated in more than four tournaments are no longer eligible for the novice division.

 

Pattern A Events:

  Open SPAR and Novice SPAR (Format: 2 prep, 2-2-4-2-2)

  Congress (Bills are due 3/1/20 and will be posted  on registration site)

  Public Forum: (Resolved: The United States should increase its use of nuclear energy for commercial energy production)

 

Pattern B Events:

● Storytelling (5 mins.)

● Poetry (5 mins. - manuscript required)

● Informative (5 mins. – Audio-visual aids are optional)

● Impromptu (7 minute bank)

● Declamation (5 mins.)

● Original Oratory/Persuasive (5 mins. – Audio-visual aids are optional)

● DUO (6 mins.)

 

In the event that there are not enough entries to Novice SPAR, the event will be collapsed into one division.

 

As per the new by-laws, all judge training is the responsibility of the school submitting their judges. We can still offer a brief refresher course but all judges should be expected to already know what they’re in for.  Teams who supply grossly unprepared judges will be charged a nuisance fee of $50.

Judging Requirements:

For Speech/SPAR/Congress, each participating school or organization must supply 1 judge per 5 entries.  For Public Forum, each participating school or organization must supply 1 judge per 2 entries.  If you need to register judges but don’t know their names yet, please use your school name with a number to indicate the judges you will be providing (i.e. Wilshire judge 1; Wilshire judge 2; etc.). $8 per judge not covered.

 

 

Fees:

$10 per individual entry (Duo and Public Forum is $20). Please make checks out to SCJFL.

For schools that have not already paid their league fees, payments must be made to and are due the day of the tournament. The fees are as follows: $200 for schools that only compete at the elementary level and $400 for schools that compete at the elementary and middle school level. Any additional tournament fees should be paid separately to SCJFL. Per the bylaws, all schools must send one representative to volunteer at one of the upcoming SCJFL tournaments. Schools that do not pay their league fees or sign up to volunteer will have their entries dropped.

 

Registration:

 For each school, we recommend you setup a virtual room for your competitors to check in during the tournament.  All competitors, make sure you test your connections before competition starts.

  

Postings will be 100% online

Media Release: By signing up for this tournament, participants have agreed that the participation will be done in an online format. Images/Videos taken by the tournament staff may be used to promote Speech & Debate and future SCJFL tournaments. We may not be able to prevent the images/videos to be taken by other parties.
