2019 SCJFL 1st Quarter Elementary Speech & Debate Tournament


Greetings to all elementary school speech and debate clubs and schools! On Saturday, October 19th, 2019, Roosevelt Elementary School will be hosting the first elementary speech tournament of the 2019-2020 school year. We hope your school or organization will be joining us.

 We will close entries on Tues. October 15th at noon, PST.


Events:

● Open SPAR and Novice SPAR (Format: 2 prep, 2-2-4-2-2)

● Congress (Bills are due September 19th and will be posted on the registration website on 

September 20th)

● Public Forum (“Resolved: The United States Federal Government should require universal background checks on all firearm sales.”)

● Storytelling (5 mins.)

● Poetry (5 mins. - binder required)

● Informative  (5 mins. – Audio-visual aids are optional.)

● Impromptu (7 minute bank)

● Declamation (5 mins.)

● Original Oratory/Persuasive  (5 mins.)

● DUO (6 mins.)


In the event that there are not enough entries to Novice SPAR, the event will be collapsed into one division. Novice is a competitor who has participated in four or fewer forensic tournaments and who has never advanced into finals or received an award.

As per the new by-laws, all judge training is the responsibility of the school submitting their judges. We can still offer a brief refresher course but all judges should be expected to already know what they’re in for.

Judging Requirements:

For Speech/SPAR/Congress, each participating school or organization must supply 1 judge per 5 entries

For Public Forum, each participating school or organization must supply 1 judge per 2 entries

 If you need to register judges but don’t know their names yet, please use your school name with a number to indicate the judges you will be providing (i.e. Wilshire judge 1; Wilshire judge 2; etc.). $8 per judge not covered.


Food:

 There will be food & snacks sold on campus during the tournament.


Fees:

 $10 per individual entry (Duo and Public Forum is $20).

Please make checks out to SGUSD.

For schools that have not already paid their league fees, payments must be made to and are due the day of the tournament. The fees are as follows: $200 for schools that only compete at the elementary level and $400 for schools that compete at the elementary and middle school level.  Any additional tournament fees should be paid separately to SGUSD. Per the bylaws, all schools must send one representative to volunteer at one of the upcoming SCJFL tournaments. Schools that do not pay their league fees or sign up to volunteer will have their entries dropped. 


Registration: Upon arrival, please look for signs to the cafeteria. Please register your team and judges.

Parking: Parking will be available on campus. There is a parking lot in front of the school, and additional parking available on the grass area on campus. There will be signs directing cars to the additional parking.


Postings will be on the in the courtyard of the school.
