    ·      In August 1945, President Truman ordered the US military to detonate two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing 210,000 people—children, women, and men.

    1c.  PEACEFUL PROTEST
    ·      On November 15, 1969, over five hundred thousand people march on Washington peacefully to protest U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, demonstrating the largest political rally in U.S. history.

    ·      On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right known as women's suffrage, and was ratified after almost a century of protest. 

    2c. CHALLENGER SHUTTLE EXPLOSION
    ·      On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members aboard. The crew consisted of five NASA astronauts, one payload specialist, and a civilian schoolteacher.

    ·      In 1543, Polish Scientist Nicolaus Copernicus wrote On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres, stating that the earth revolves around the Sun, and not the other way around.  This was one development that led to the Scientific Revolution.

    ·      A series of four coordinated attacks by the terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

    ·      “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is the first feature length animated film released by Disney. The movie made its debut on December 21, 1937 in Los Angeles.

    A military leader in France in the 1400s. Joan claimed an archangel told her to reclaim France from English domination. Leading an army into battle, she defeated the English.  At 16, she was captured by English nobles and burned at the stake. 

    c.    Jane Goodall
    Studied chimpanzees in Africa.  She discovered that chimps had different personalities as individuals, and that they made and used tools.  Before her study, it was thought that only humans had those qualities.

    An Italian painter, sculptor, and inventor who lived in the mid 1400s.  The term 'renaissance man', someone who does many things very well, is used today to describe people who resemble da Vinci. 

    c. Charles Darwin
    An English biologist best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. His idea that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors is now widely accepted, and considered a foundational concept in science.

    Now considered one of the greatest artists of his time, he would get so obsessed with painting that he often wouldn't eat. After an argument with another painter, van Gogh cut off part of his left ear, then wrapped it up and presented it to a woman as a "present".  Gogh once committed himself to a mental hospital and ultimately took his own life.

    Began working for women’s right to vote in the 1840s. In 1850, she presented the Declaration of Sentiments, stating the men and women were created equal and should be treated the same under the law.

    Made the discovery proving that germs cause disease. Later, he found that he could make a weak form of a disease that would cause people to become immune to the stronger form of the disease. He called this weak form a "vaccine."

    He was a central champion for justice in the world. His non-violent resistance movement won independence for India from the British.  His firm belief in non-violence has been followed by many other civil rights leaders including Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Caesar Chavez. 

    c.    Rachel Carson
    The founder of environmental science. Rachel was concerned about the bad effects of pesticides on the health of people and the environment. She wrote a book called Silent Spring, referring to birds dying due to pesticides and the spring being silent without their song.
