The 2020 SCJFL Middle School

Southern California Championship Tournament

May 1-3, 2020

Wilshire Academy is proud to announce The 2020 SCJFL Middle School Southern California Championship Tournament.  This tournament is meant to encourage a healthy competition and provide an opportunity to sharpen competitive speeches before the national tournament.

The tournament will be held on Friday, May 1rd - Sunday, May 3rd, 2020.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our entire community, we have decided to continue with the tournament on the scheduled date/times.  However, we have made a few changes from previous years.

The tournament will be held entirely online.  Please see the attached Best Practices Guide for additional information regarding the preparation for Internet preparation.  The Best Practices Guide is also available on the tournament registration page.  This guide will have suggestions and policies regarding specific events.

Due to the unusual nature of the circumstances, we may need to adjust this invitation or the best practices document.  Please be patient with us; often times, we have ideas that seem like they will work, and then we need to change our minds because we have found stronger alternatives.

Eligibility:

All competitors who advanced into an open division final round or received a placement award (speaker awards for debate are not eligible) at an SCJFL middle school tournament are eligible.

Entries:

Each coach must submit two ‘intent to enter’ lists by noon Friday, April 24th (submit to Robert@CannonballofDeath.com).  The fist list will consist of the competitors, their intended event(s), the tournament at which they qualified, and their placement at that tournament.  The second list is a ‘wish list.’  These competitors are ones that did compete, but did not qualify at a tournament, and whom wish to compete in an event if the minimum slots are not fulfilled.  The tournament will accept as many high ranking non-qualifiers as possible until the slots are full.

Each list must be submitted in the correct format, or the entries will not be accepted.  Please reference the form on the tournament registration page for clarification.

***Judge fee for not picking up***

The biggest problem we face during tournaments are judges who do not accept ballots.  We are requiring all judges to accept their ballots 5 minutes before the start of the round time.  If a judge does not accept the ballot, a $50 fee will be assessed for that judge for that round (judges who skip multiple rounds may be charged repeatedly).  Please ask your judges to refresh their e-mail 10 minutes before the beginning of each round.

All judges must have a cell phone and e-mail on file through the school roster.  This enables the tournament to contact the judge through two methods.  We will honor the ballot preference when sending eBallots.  However, we may need to contact a judge regarding a decision, and in such cases, we will notify the judge through both text and e-mail.  Both the e-mail and cell phone number are hidden from the tournament director; notifications are sent through ForensicsTournament.net, which hides private information from tournament directors.

Fees will be assessed on Wednesday April 30th at 12:00 p.m. PST.  Any changes after this date will be subject to the following penalties.  Please enter all judges through the forensicstournament.net registration website.  Alternatively, you may pay through PayPal or Venmo, using the following accounts:

Venmo: Alex Jung (HongJoon-Jung)

PayPal: jung.wilshireacademy@gmail.com

$50 school fee

$15 per IE/Congress/Spar slot ($30 per Duo team)

$40 per Lincoln Douglas/Public Forum slot

$30 judging fee per uncovered IE slot (One judge covers 5 IE slots)

$125 per uncovered debate slot (One judge covers 2 LD/PD/PFD slots)

$20 per change after Friday April 24th, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. PST.

$50 No-show fee per competitor.

$50 No-show judge fee per round.*

$200 dropped judge fee after May 1st at 12:01 a.m. PST.

$100 Delay of Tournament fee

*To ensure that the tournament starts on time and runs smoothly, each judge will have a 5 minute window to accept his/her ballot.  If the judge does not accept during this time, the ballot may be pushed to another judge, and the no-show judge’s school will be penalized the $50 no-show fee.  Coaches should update their rosters on ForensicsTournament.net, change their ballot preferences to e-mail/text, and double-check that their judges have a reliable Internet connection.

Throughout the entire tournament, we will have a live help room for anyone having trouble.  The URL will be https://8x8.vc/SCJFLHelp
