Awards Location

On behalf of PSCFA, I would like to thank you for taking the time and energy to attend the Cool Off this weekend. Below is important information that you should share with students, judges, and coaches attending. I know there is a lot of information but this should help the tournament run smoothly for everyone. While we encourage you, your students, and judges to reach out to tournament staff if you have questions, please check the Tournament Invitation for important information they may need to know.

  1. Parking: Free parking is available in Lot 5. Keep in mind that there are other events happening on campus, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early in order to secure a free parking space. Also, you MUST park head in. Backing into parking spots will likely result in ticketing by Campus Police.

  2. Rooms: The tournament HQ will be in the Business, Sciences, and Technology Innovation Center (BSTIC). Competition rounds will be primarily distributed across BSTIC, A 200 (Social Sciences), A 300 (Humanities, Fine Arts, & Direct HR), and Liberal Arts. Here is a Campus Map and below are locations of important rooms for the tournament:

    1. Business Meeting - BSTIC 111

    2. Judges Room - BSTIC 215

    3. Student Wellness - BSTIC 217

    4. IPDA Central Strike - BSTIC 219

    5. NPDA Topic Announce - Courtyard in between BSTIC, A200, and A300

    6. Extemp Draw - BSTIC 219

    7. Tab - BSTIC 210

  4.
  5. Events: There are a couple of events that have collapsed including NPDA and STE with Info. However, we are happy to report that due to overwhelming effort and interest from students from this year, we have enough judges to avoid collapsing more events than we usually do at the Cool Off! All of the collapses have been completed in FTN and you and your students can check their entries to confirm if anything about their event (division or combining with other events) has changed.

  6. Judges: Several notes about judges that are important for both judges to receive directly and you as coaches at your institution to know:

    1. ALL judges must have completed FRED Certification PRIOR to when they begin judging. Judges who HAVE NOT completed the training will not be permitted to judge and can result in nuisance fees for your school.

    2. Anyone who is new to judging needs to attend the Judge’s training at 9:30am tomorrow in BSTIC 215.

    3. As a friendly reminder, judges should pick up their ballots promptly. Ballots will be sent out anywhere up to 30 minutes before the next round. Failure to pick up ballots will result in nuisance fees and prevent the tournament from releasing standby judges.

    4. A handful of judges still DO NOT have their contact info (email or phone number) verified with FTN. Please make sure their info is verified prior to when they will begin judging.

    5. If a judge isn’t receiving ballots or notices from the tournament at any point, please have them contact Brittany Hubble in tab (310.483.6559).

  7. Student Sign-In: Students entered in debate events will be required to sign-in between 8:30 and 9am on Saturday in the Student Wellness room. For parli, partners are NOT permitted to sign in for each other. If you have a student that runs into an issue on the way to the tournament, please reach out to Brittany Hubble ASAP. Sign-in is NOT required for students on IE day (Sunday).

  8. Debate Rules: There are some PSCFA specific debate rules that everyone should be aware of:

    1. During prelim rounds, students will double prep in NPDA. This means that they will be given a longer prep period before rounds 1 and 3 because before round 1 the topic for rounds 1 and 2 will be announced, and before round 3 the topic for rounds 3 and 4 will be announced. Students will debate both sides of each topic.

    2. There is no longer group prep in ANY debate event.

    3. There is no e-flowing in ANY debate event.

    4. NPDA topics will be announced centrally and IPDA topics will be determined at central strike (locations both listed above).

    5. NPDA no longer has flex time.

  9. Fun: In continuation with the implementation of a “Fun Czar,” there will be fun activities for students (and maybe judges who are current students) to participate in throughout the tournament. Tell these folks to keep an eye out for FUN info throughout the tournament.

  10. Business Meeting: The Spring PSCFA business meeting will be tomorrow at 1pm. Here is the agenda.

We hope you all have a wonderful tournament experience! Please make sure everyone knows that they are welcome to reach out to the tournament staff if they have any issues or questions throughout the weekend!
