Lincoln High School Pirate In Portland Speech and Debate Tournament May 18, 2013 The Lincoln Speech and Debate team invites you to this ‘Arrrg’-rated post-state tournament on May 18, 2013. We are striving to offer a fun, relaxing tournament to end the season. The tournament’s ‘come and pillage’ attitude requires little preparation for competitors and includes entertaining alternatives for those who don’t break. All events will be open division. Because the tournament is taking place after state, OSAA rules will be followed somewhat loosely. We strive to keep prices low, and offer homestays for teams who come in from out-of-town to keep costs down. We encourage schools to bring competitors for this delightful, easy-going tournament.   Events: Pattern A: Parli Debate, SPAR Pattern B: Impromptu, Extemp, Duo Impromptu, Pop Culture Extemp (thanks to Ridgefield HS for the suggestion!) Pattern C: Congress Pattern D: Consolation Events (Congress of the Nonsensical and Rap Battle) Event rules All Oregon-style events will follow OSAA guidelines. For our unconventional events, here are the rules we'll be using: Duo Impromptu: From Ken Bisbee at Ridgefield: "the rules are pretty simple.  It is run the same as regular impromptu with three topics.  There is a required one minute preparation time as the team decides which one to choose, how to address it, and how to split the speaking time.  They have five minutes to speak.  Impromptu with a team mate." SPAR: Please see <a href=\"https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzNOEzC8HndyeGNnbG5PMnFpOWc/edit\">https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzNOEzC8HndyeGNnbG5PMnFpOWc/edit</a> Pop Culture Extemp: sources should come from People, Us Weekly, and similar magazines which provide ample analytical reporting on the pressing pop culture topics of the day. Questions may take the form of, "Will Jay-Z and Beyonce last the test of time?" "What's the deal with Kim and Kanye?" or "Has Disney bitten off more than it can chew with the upcoming Star Wars films?" Consolation Events: Consolation events will include a Congress of the Nonsensical and Rap Battle. All competitors who do not break will have a chance to participate in both events. Congress of the Nonsensical is an event inspired by the Cleveland Cannibals Congress Tournament last year. It will include somewhat non-conventional bills (The USFG will fund the creation of a zombie army). Lincoln will supply some legislation, however competitors are encouraged to bring their own. Legislation for Congress of the Nonsensical does not have to be pre-submitted. The Rap Battle event is a contest in freestyle rap. Competitors can sign up in the student lounge throughout the tournament, and finalists will perform at the awards ceremony. The final Rap Battle round will be determined by the audience, not judges. One can earn awards in both the Congress of the Nonsensical and in the Rap Battle. . Come in jeans and a tee shirts, but no costumes. Congress Legislation: If you have legislation prepared in advance, please email it to Emma Hoffman (emmah245@gmail.com). She will put together a legislation bundle and have it available to download by Wednesday, May 15  so competitors can prepare speeches in advance. Emma will accept Congress or Congress of the Nonsensical legislation, although bills for the Nonsensical Congress do not have to be submitted beforehand. Awards: Goodie bags will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each event, including consolation events. Fees: School fee: $20.00 Impromptu, Duo Impromptu, Extemp (IEs): $5.00 Congress: $5.00 Parli, Spar (Debate): $7.00 Uncovered IE Entry $10.00 extra ($10.00 total per uncovered entry) Uncovered Debate team $10.00 extra ($10.00 total per uncovered entry) Judging: Each judge will cover 3 IE entries and 2 debate entries. We would prefer you bring judges rather than have uncovered entries. Food: There is plenty of food located in walking distance, and members of the Lincoln speech and debate team will be leading a caravan down to the local food carts on SW 10th and Alder for lunch, although there will be a snack table available at Lincoln. We also will provide maps and lists of good places to eat at around the school. Registration: Register via www.forensicstournament.net. Initial registration is due by Tuesday, May 14th. Adds and Drops will be allowed up until 5:00 PM on Thursday. Fees will be calculated at 5:00 PM on Thursday, May 16th. Any drops after that point will not alter the amount due. Questions?
