Welcome to the home page for the 2020 Mark O. Hatfield Memorial Debates tournament hosted by Willamette University on Feb 8-9, 2020 for College students.

Status: Tournament Completed

On behalf of the staff and students of the Willamette University Debate Union, I am happy to invite you to the 16th annual Mark O. Hatfield Memorial debates. The Hatfield Memorial Debates will be held on the campus of Willamette University on February 8 - 9, 2020.

The tournament will host open competition in Worlds-Style debate. We will have divisions in both Spanish and English. Our intent is to provide a gracious and leisurely tournament where debaters have time to engage in social activities as well as competition.

Tournament fees of $150 per two-person team include the cost of lunch both days and coffee in the mornings. If numbers warrant breaking to quarterfinals, we will also provide snacks before the finals on Sunday. To try to encourage a diversity of schools to attend our turn, we will waive the team fee for one team from any school traveling more than 500 miles. Schools must provide judges equal to the number of teams -1. If you are able to provide additional judges, we may be able to negotiate a reduction in their fees. Institutional judges are committed to judge one round pass the elimination of their teams from competition. The judging fee for an uncovered team is $150 per team. Please make checks payable to Willamette University.

The tournament hotel will be La Quinta Inn & Suites in Salem.  Rates are $114 for 1– 4 people and includes breakfast.  Call 503-391-7000 for reservations and ask for the sales manager who can give you the Willamette University Debate rates.

We request an email of a preliminary notification of your intention to enter by January 25 to trapp@willamette.edu. The entry deadline will be February 1. Fees will be assessed as of February 1, 2020. Drops after that deadline will receive only a partial reimbursement because we are required to cover catering cost that will be assessed February 1. Entries for the tournament will be accepted through https://forensicstournament.net/Hatfield/20.

If you have any questions, please email trapp@willamette.edu.
