Go here to register for optional dinner. </h2>  <a href=\"http://garygillespie.wikispaces.com/WorldsCup2012\">http://garygillespie.wikispaces.com/WorldsCup2012</a> Dress Code: To foster a professional ethos, our tournament will require a Business Casual dress code for competitors and judges. <a href=\"http://www.career.vt.edu/JobSearchGuide/BusinessCasualAttire.html\">http://www.career.vt.edu/JobSearchGuide/BusinessCasualAttire.html</a> BRITISH-PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE (J, O) The BP division will use the WUDC rules [except that internet research will be allowed during prep time] with a 7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7 format and 15 minutes to prepare (including walk time). The topics will be centrally announced and they will vary per round. Students can use any printed materials during preparation time, -- internet access and electronic access to computer files is allowed. BP debate is considered public speaking at its best, so judges will look to speaking ability as well are argumentation. All topics will be drawn from recent issues of THE ECONOMIST and the Editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal. WUDC rules can be found at <a href=\"redir.aspx?C=1a6e0f9e546449f1b308e33879f1027a&URL=http%3a%2f%2fflynn.debating.net%2fSydrules.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http://flynn.debating.net/Sydrules.htm</a> Impromptu 2 to 4 minutes. During prep time for semi-finals and finals, contestants will be given two word topics. The first word or phrase will be given at the start of the speech. One minute into the speech a second word or phrase will be given. The contestant must incorporate the second word with the first before the speech is concluded. 30 minutes will be allotted for this event, so contestants speak on a first come scenario (meaning that all who wish to enter may not get a chance). 4-TEAM CHARACTER DEBATE (O) 1. This experimental debate format is modeled LOOSLEY on BP debate rules. 2. Topics will NOT be serious in nature. In addition to a motion for the round, contestants on each side (government and opposition) will also draw the names of two “characters” (celebrities, political figures, cartoon characters, comic book heroes, etc.) who they must portray throughout the debate. 3. Judges will be instructed to base their decisions in the rounds on how well each of the sides portrays their particular characters. The focus of this event is on how well contestants can debate in a style that is consistent with their particular characters. Performance skills, creativity, and an ability to work well with your partner are the most important criteria. 4. Students may make use of any and all outside resources during their preparation time. Consulting with coaches and teammates is permitted. Contestants can use limited notes and basic props. 5. Time limits: 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 with 15 minutes prep time prior to the beginning of the debate. 6. Points of information are permitted at any time during the debate. Each side is allowed to ask up to two questions during each of the other team’s constructive speeches. 7. Three person debate teams are not permitted. 8. Open division. Teams must provide judges according to the N-1 rule. Students are welcome to be wing judges -- this is an excellent learning experience for new people. Wing judges help but are not in charge of the panel.
