 Dear participants,

In light of the current entry sizes and the number of available judges, we've made accommodations to our schedule. Please review the tentative schedule for this Friday's debates:

Friday's Schedule:

  • 11:30-1:00 - IPDA Round 1
  • 1:00-2:00 - LD Round 1
  • 1:00-2:30 - IPDA Round 2
  • 2:00-3:00 - LD Round 2
  • 2:30-4:00 - IPDA Round 3
  • 3:00-4:00 - LD Round 3
  • 4:00-5:30 - IPDA Round 4
  • 4:00-5:00 - LD Round 4
  • 5:30-6:30 - LD Elim 1
  • 5:45-6:45 - IPDA Elim 1
  • 6:45-7:45 - IPDA Elim 2

Important Points to Consider:

LD will break all winning records but will not exceed the quarter-finals.

Non-advancing IPDA students from the open category might be utilized to judge novice IPDA out-rounds. While our rules already mention the use of undergraduates for judging, it's worth noting that we will employ them as necessary. We appreciate everyone's understanding on this.

Given the need for 90-minute rounds, there will be no designated dinner break on Friday.

Aside from a 15-minute interval post round 4, the schedule is tight. We are aware that events might run slightly behind, especially on Friday. Your patience and cooperation will be much appreciated.

Dear Forensics Colleagues, August 15, 2023

The Southwest Baptist University forensics program, the Heartland Sigma chapter of Pi Kappa Delta, and

the Bob R. Derryberry School of Communication Arts want to invite you to the Bob R. Derryberry  Memorial Season Opener to be held on the campus of SBU September 29th and 30th  . We invite you to come to lovely Bolivar, MO for two days of strong early season competition.

Our tournament offers four preliminary rounds of College International Public Debate Association (IPDA) and four rounds of Lincoln Douglas debate on Friday; and all 11 standard AFA individual events (plus interviewing) on Saturday. One special note about interviewing. All competitors in that event will be expected to submit a hard copy of their resume at registration. Those who do not will be ineligible for the final round (which will be the resume round).

Our tournament offers several nice amenities including...

  • A humane competition schedule on both Friday and Saturday.
  • A relatively compact campus—no competition building is more than a brisk five-minute walk from our tournament hub in the Jester Learning and Performance Center.
  • Many hotel accommodations in the Bolivar/Springfield area.
  • A nice selection of local eateries! (For a small town in Missouri anyway!)
  • Lunch provided by the SBU Forensics Program on Saturday!
  • A wide array of individual and sweepstakes awards!
  • Nice trophies!
  • A chance to start the season with the warm camaraderie fostered by the activity we love!

We hope that you will come and join us in October! Please contact us with any questions you may have. Sincerely,

Taylor D Corlee
Director of Forensics Southwest Baptist University
