Judge Philosophies

Strongly prefer direct clash and reasonable interpretations of the motion. Not a fan of rudeness. Rebuttals should be directed at the argument in quesion and not be presented as an indictment of the opponent's character/worth.

Presumption is surrendered in counter-plan debate unless otherwise specified by the debaters.

Kritiks are fine for me, but I am a bit "old school" so the links will need to be clear, the literature applied properly, and the expectations for voting (framework or other) be explicit.

Performance will not be appreciated, but I will listen and do my best to adapt to the situation. I do vote on the arguments, not the performance itself, so if I understand the framework and the argument makes sense I will vote for it regardless of how I might "feel" about it. My bias will favor the non-performance team such that any reasonable justification to reject the performance is likely going to convince me. I try not to be judgemental, such that I will not create additional penalties on speaker points in the event that I don't vote for the performance.

In Korea, I dislie how little rebuttal is emphasized in debate in favor of fluency (new arguments). I have the same attitude toward British Parliamentary debates. Clash is a really important part of debate. I will likely penalize clash-avoidance strategies and reward egagement. Respect is also critical for me. I dislike arrogance when regarding opponents as inferior and verbal aggression when debaters become uncivil towards one another. Humor is a plus, but the arguments must be solid - performance and fluency are tools of the trade and are not a substitute for actual argumentation.

My flow skills are precise, yet I am out-of-practice for speed debates (it doesn't take long for me to get caught up). I only prefer speed debate when both sides want that. Otherwise I strongly prefer professional communication techniques versus the game of debate. I try to follow the directions provided by the debaters and show respect for the norms of debate as it is practiced in different parts of the world.

I did policy when I was young, Parli when I returned to college and now coach Public Forum and LD in Korea.

Lots of clash with plenty of justification and warrants and my ballot is yours for the taking.
