I am a communications Lincoln-Douglas judge who likes things in black and white. The debater needs to basically spell it out for me. I like Value to Value and Criterion to Criterion Clash as well as voters. I do not like critiques. I like a steady stream of dialogue but I do not like fast speaking like a policy debate. If I can't follow and do a flow then your arguments will mean nothing to me.

I have done policy debate for 4 years and have now coached for 3. I will try and lay out exactly what I want to minimize judge intervention. If you have any questions feel free to ask in round.

Overview

I am a tabs judge. I believe debate is a game to be played and I should not interfere with it. I default policy maker unless a framework argument is brought up to prove otherwise. I believe that each side should hold up their burden and enjoy clash between warrants.

Aff:

I am ok with kritikal aff’s. I ran one in high school. As the aff you should know this does require a little more work to win, but hey, that is why we do it, right? Performance aff’s are a little different. If they are on topic and relate they are easier to get my ballot. These would be such things as reading poetry about the topic or such, but others that just want to discuss discourse in our daily lives without pertaining to debate are going to have and extremely hard time winning the ballot unless you can prove to me how it is in my jurisdiction to vote for such an aff. Any other questions feel free to ask in round.

Your perm better be more than just “perm do both,” “perm do the plan then the cp,” or “perm do the plan and all non-mutually exclusive parts of the cp.” That is not getting flowed unless you explain to me what the world of the perm looks like.

Neg: This I will break up a little bit more.

K’s: I love the k. I ran it in high school on both sides. However, I regret to say I have not kept up on my philosophy reading so some of the newer k’s. It may take me until the 2nc to understand but I love learning the new ones. That being said, be able to defend your ideology. I have a harder time buying into an ideology when the neg runs multiple worlds as k’s are supposed to be in round solvency. Having multiple arguments are good but when it comes down to it if I have to believe whole heartedly in your kritik to reject the aff team you should believe whole heartedly in your kritik as well. Oh, and one more thing: I love a good framework debate!!!

T: I am ok with T. I have a hard time voting on potential abuse. Extend you standards and voters. I fall more towards reasonability so prove to me why competing interps are better and I will vote on it.

CP: Make them logical and make them count. I was the 2A in debate so condo is a tough argument for me but that being said I can be persuaded. It just takes a little bit more effort. PIC’s are ok. Just make sure they make sense.

Anything I missed in here please ask in round for any clarifications

Background:

CX competitor for Centennial High School (Boise, ID) for 4 years

CX competitor for the College of Idaho for 2 years

Parli competitor for the College of Idaho for 1 year

Asst Coach for the College of Idaho 3 years (Parli, IEs, IPDA)

Head Coach for Renaissance High School for 4 years (CX, LD, PF, IEs)

Philosophy:

I am usually open to most arguments made in the debate and will leave the debaters the responsibility to both justify their own arguments and attack those of their opponents. Having said that, I evaluate arguments based both on how those arguments appear on the flow AND how those arguments persuade my thinking in the debate round. For instance, a neg team may drop a conditionality bad argument on the flow, but it may not be a voting issue because there was no demonstrable impact in the round. Just because the issue is dropped does not make the issue magically convincing - that work must still be done by the debaters.

CX Issues:

T is a voting issue unless proven otherwise in the round.

SPEC arguments are not a-priori arguments unless proven otherwise in the round.

CPs are legit unless proven otherwise in the round. I think Dispo is the most legit way to run a CP, but not necessarily the case. There are a variety of reasons to run CPs in a variety of ways. I don't tend to vote on theory issues unless there is actual in-round abuse.

Ks are legit for aff and neg unless proven otherwise. I tent to vote on Ks when they are consistent with the neg strategy. Reading a Statism K while simultaneously running an agent CP seems to defeat the purpose of the criticism and damages your cred. It doesn't mean that I won't vote for it, it just means that you have to do some extra work justifying your contradiction.

Impact Calc: I lean on probability before magnitude unless proven otherwise in the round.

LD Issues:

I am open to a variety of argumentation and strategy.

I am most used to a value criterion debate, but I would love to see different strategies and theory.

Ks are legit unless proven otherwise in the round.

Plans are OK unless proven otherwise in the round.

PF Issues:

I am open to a variety of argumentation and strategy.

I am most used to a straight-up fact round debate, but I would love to see different strategies and theory.

Ks and other various arguments are legit unless proven otherwise in the round.

Any other questions, just ask.
