<p>I try to be positive and encouraging in my comments, noting areas where the student performed well, or at least showed promise. I try to keep each round relaxed and supportive, encouraging applause for every student when he or she finishes. Finally, I give each student a preliminary score initially, adjusting the final scores only after all the participants in each round are done and can be compared with each other. I try to provide honest scores -- nobody gets a perfect score unless they&#39;re&nbsp;the middle school equivalent of John F. Kennedy -- without heavily penalizing anyone who might be competing for the first time. My goal is for parents to pay attention to the comments, first and foremost, to the placement (first, seconed, third), and last and least to the actual numbers given for each round.</p> <p>In the end, I feel my most important role&nbsp;is to critique each performance by offering specific ideas on how to improve and underlining what I saw and heard as each student&#39;s strengths on which to build for furture competitions.</p>
